Easy to Implement
The Map of Medicine is available entirely as a web application, making it efficient to set up. It can be accessed from home, in a surgery or a hospital with just a web browser.
The Map's simple user interface also means that there is little training necessary. Nevertheless, other activities can ensure that the Map is used effectively by healthcare professionals across an organisation.
Raising awareness
The initial engagement components of the rollout programme ensure that all potential users are aware of the Map of Medicine and the objectives of an organisation prior to any implementation.
At the senior executive level, we ensure that operational, technical and clinical executives are aware of the rollout and have had an input into the specific rollout strategy. Typically a key driver is established for an organisation to adopt the Map and awareness is embedded into existing associated programmes. For example, in England a driver might be to support a specific government objective such as 18 week referral to treatment time or Practice Based Commissioning.
Once we have sufficient engagement from executive stakeholders, we begin raising awareness more widely. This begins by identifying key opinion leaders within the organisation and ensuring that we have communicated the objectives and benefits of the Map of Medicine rollout to them. From there broadcast communication such as posters and open invite meetings can spread the message in a way that’s relevant to the local care setting.
Increasing Adoption
The most appropriate users for the Map of Medicine are typically the more junior staff within an organisation or senior staff who are not working within their specialist area. Our adoption communication campaigns target these groups to make them aware that a knowledge resource is now available for them to reference.
Local librarians are key to facilitating knowledge and education within healthcare organisations. Consequently, we have a specific series of communication programmes aimed at this important community to ensure that they are aware of the benefits that the Map of Medicine can deliver.
As adoption increases we typically get enquiries on how an organisation can localise the Map of Medicine to reflect local practices and to include quick access to local knowledge resources.
