Evidence grading indicator

In October 2006 a new version of Map of Medicine was released including some key customer- focused features, including Images and Evidence Certificates.

Images

At the point of care, a picture really can be worth a thousand words. We have partnered with Mediscan to provide more than 160 images in this update, with many more to come. Users can access full colour images with explanatory captions via hyperlinks within the “Quick Info” tab text in the following specialties:

  • Dermatology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • A&E (Burns).

We will be expanding our image library over the next content updates to meet the needs of our clinician users.

Evidence Certificates

Content in the Map of Medicine is developed through a rigorous process, involving evidence searching, appraisal, and peer review. We make sure that all new and updated pathways are published using the best available knowledge sources.

View evidence link

Select the "View evidence and page information" link on any page to see a summary of the evidence used for that page, plus a detailed list of the evidence grade applied to each information-containing node.

References associated with each node are cited, along with a full list of the references that were appraised for that pathway.

References

Key dates are prominently shown, including the date of creation of new pages, the last update and last review dates for previously-existing pages, as well as the reviewers that were involved. The due date for the next review is also given.

All this information is given in the context of certifications granted. We have now added this data to 132 pathways, and we are working toward completing all 300+ pathways by our next scheduled content update, due in March 2007.

Map Management Suite

While the Map of Medicine is a source of high-quality information to assist clinicians with patient journeys, at times local providers have asked if they can have specific changes, additions or modifications made to their View of the Map.

In response to this need, the Map of Medicine is introducing a new suite of tools to create and manage content – the Map Management Suite (MMS).

MMS is composed of an online application, Map Manager, and its desktop software companion, Map Editor.

The MMS has been designed to streamline page creation, updating and editing, as well as bring clinical review, approval and publication workflows online. MMS makes creation of new content and modifications of inherited content easy and user-friendly.

Map of Medicine personnel will be happy to help you determine if your organisation could benefit from localisation.

Patient Information

Images within the Map

In order to allow end users to provide patients with high quality information related to their condition, the Map of Medicine is piloting the inclusion of printable leaflets within the care journeys.

Authored as part of the Tuberculosis National Knowledge Service Pilot, five multipage leaflets that are appropriate to both patients and workers within risk sectors have been included in the Tuberculosis care journey.

As more patient information is sourced and authored it will be added to the relevant content in the Map of Medicine.
